I don’t think I say he’s a quietist. However, in The Man Comes Around - where most of these quotes are from - he advances a very figurative and spiritualized reading of Revelation in particular. That’s what I mean by pietism here.
I don’t think this is because he’s starting from quietism like Wright: I think he’s just kind of inherited the preterism that became a popular Reformed position in the 19th century. Preterism relies on extremely abstraction interpretations to work.
